Our Steele Street Campus opened in 2016 as a full, K–5 turnaround of what was Pioneer Charter School. In its first year, Steele Street scholars had the highest academic growth in the state (out of nearly 1,500 elementary schools!), demonstrating that all kids from all backgrounds can thrive when provided with the right learning environment.
Our first campus was founded in 2011 to provide a tuition-free, college prep education to elementary-age children from across northeast Denver. Launching with 100 kindergarten and 1st graders, Arapahoe Street grew one grade level per year until reaching full scale in the 2015-’16 school year. The schools’ founding 5th graders accomplished what many considered impossible: reversing America’s historical achievement gap.
U Prep’s newest campus—opened in August 2024—was co-designed with a group of passionate parent leaders from within the community who championed a new school option for their children. Families spent multiple years developing all aspects of the program alongside U Prep leadership, with unwavering focus on educational excellence. Beginning with pre-K in 2024-’25, the school will grow one grade at a time until it’s a full, pre-K–5 program.
